Default Shifter shaft seal

How difficult is it to change the shifter shaft seal? Mine has been leaking since I had the chrome primary cover installed. Any pics would be greatly appreciated!

It was likely damaged from being installed wrong, I hear those double lip seals can be a bite in the *** to get in w/o damaging them.

Please explain a "double lip seal" to me. My Clymer manual does not even show a shifter shaft seal listed in the 5 speed transmission/primary exploded view. But everyone tells me its there. Can it be replaced without pulling the primary cover?

Pull the old one out with a dental pick. Set the new one with a deep socket. It may be a mm socket. I don't remember.

On my 04 Sporty I had the same problem. I tried to replace the seal myself, but I was unsuccessful. I took it to the HD dealer and the tech did it in about five minutes with a special tool.

What method did you use? How did you try to install it?
What did the "special tool look like"?

Did not get to see the tool. He took the bike in the back. As far as taking the old seal out, I just used a small flat head screwdriver and a pick and got it out. I tried to use the same tools to get the new seal in, but I just could not get the double seal to go around the lip in the primary. I suppose if I really knew what I was doing, I could have gotten it in place without the tech.

I got the new seal today. My indy told me to use a socket and tap it in. I will tackle that tomorrow night.
