Filling'er up goes wrong
On my way to work in the morning, stop for gas, and as I'm filling I back the nozzle out a little to see how full it is... next thing I know the nozzle slips out and I pour gas all over the bike. Luckily it didn't ignite on the pipes/engine. What a F'n mess though. I ran inside and got a handful of napkins and did a quick clean job. Washed and re-waxed when I got home at the end of the day. No harm, but what a stupid move! - Jerm |
RE: Filling'er up goes wrong
Hehe. Sounds familiar. I did that not once but twice while filling up one day. As soon as I got done cleaning up I continued to fill it up then pulled it out just a hair and blew gas all over the friken place. Now I am overly cautious when I fill up.

I did that while half way through a 300 mile trip... it went all over the bike... and all over me.[:@] Luckly I had a spare shirt in the saddlebags. While I was in the midst of cleaning up a few other bikers rolled in, but I don't think they suspected anything, as I already changed my shirt, and was just wiping off the tank. ;)

RE: Filling'er up goes wrong
Been there, done that. I was on my first ever commute to work and pulled the nozzle out just a touch too much; blasted my leathers pretty good. By the time I arrived (60 mi. later), I couldn't smell anything on me. Another benefit of biking, I guess...;)

RE: Filling'er up goes wrong
Pulled the same stunt when I was about 14 with a Cushman Eagle. Since then I have always, and I mean always carried a large handkerchief in one of my pockets. Nothing like having to ride home (about 3 miles thank goodness) with gas on your uh ...levis

Jerm: We all do that on occasion while trying to get that last little drop in the tank. Always position your bike so that you can rest the nozzle against one side of the filler hole and still direct the stream into the small inner hole. Also as mentioned above make it a practice to point the fuel nozzle downward before bringing it to your bike. Some of those darn nozzles leak between uses and fill up the spout leaving about 2 or 3 ounces of fuel ready to be poured onto your neat paint job.
I am right handed and find with the Sportster it is best for me to pull up to the gas pump putting it on my left side. I stay astride the bike and keep it vertical with leg pressure thereby keeping the fuel opening at its highest possible position. With my Road King Classic and the fuel opening on the right side of the tank, I find it best for me to pull up to the gas pump putting it on my right side. I place the RKC on the jiffy stand and dismount. That places the fuel opening at the highest possible position. I start the pump and move over to the left side of the bike. That positions me to look directly down into the fuel opening and allows me to rest the nozzle on the lower edge of the opening. As the fuel level reaches the inner plate and small opening, I withdraw the nozzle keeping it barely running until the fuel level that I want is reached. Even with all that forethought and preparation, it is inevitable that a babe walks by distracting me just enough to get a little fuel on the tank. [:@] ............... BC |

ORIGINAL: leonel been there !!!! after 3 hours of detailing I went to fill up, had not pull the trigger when gas poured over the tank , someone before me must have topped off and alot gas was left in the nozzle\ Boy did I feel like a goof! First day with my new Harley, wife on back (of course) and I pulled up to the pump all cool, crawled my badass off, took off the filler lid, grabbed the nozle and dumped what seemed like about 11 gallons of gas all over my tank. Lost ALL my cool points! Now when I pull the nozzle out of the pump I always dump the fuel on the ground before I put in my tank. Its usually only a few drips, But I for for one would have it on the pavement than my chrome! CR |
RE: Filling'er up goes wrong
Been there right after washing and waxing. I noticed the fuel doors on a dresser are a pain in the ass because they open towards you.
