Cool Rocker Box Gasket leaks,,,

Fix It Once the right way,,,

The Chrome Rocker covers leak real soon on low mile sporties.
Mine are powder black, I got only 3600 miles and they are showing a "Damp" line about a half inch wide all the way arround the Rocker cover.
I can wipe my finger over this and get some,,But It's just a stain,,no dripping or running yet so I will wait.
People are replacing the gasket only to find It needs a new one again some miles later.
Fix it by using Permatex on the New Gasket,, a thin coat on both sides will do it.

Just curious where this suggested advice comes from and what's the heaviest wrenching you've done on your motor?
It doesn't sound like you've done this on your bike so how do you know it's a great solution, nor is it recommended by the MoCo to my knowledge.

BTW, my 04 1200 with chrome rocker covers and 60,000+ miles has never had a jug or rocker gasket leak.

Put a Cometic Gasket in there and be done with it.

Using sealant is a bad idea. Have some get inside the head or rockers and it will fock something up.

I'm with cHarley with this.........you sure sound like your a salesman.

My front rocker was leaking something ugly due to a pinched gasket. 15 minutes of elbow grease, a new gasket, and a wipe down of excess oil did the trick. No sealant gunk needed. That was a pretty good sales pitch, though!

cHarley, Mine started leaking last month after sickpuppy and I took off together when we left the Cheyenne saloon last month. I cracked the throttle hard enough for the rev limiter to kick in at every gear change.
I am beginning to think over revving is what starts these leaks.
Did you know a 1200 sporty can keep up with a 103 road king?

Seems that a lot of 08 or newer Xls have rocker box leaks.

I'm just noticing that I might be developing a problem with the front rocker box gasket- found a bit of oil hanging on the underside of the front jug mount. Or it could just be that I haven't washed the bike good since May......cleaned it up, brakleen'd the area, and wait to see what comes back.

Thinking about giving it a good soapy bath this weekend, if the weather's not nice enough to ride.

"Mine are powder black, I got only 3600 miles and they are showing a "Damp" line about a half inch wide all the way around the Rocker cover." - Quote from originator.

This would be unusual to have "damp" or seepage/oozing all the way around the rocker cover. This would have to mean one of the sandwiches was either elevated exactly the same height or the entire gasket disintegrated exactly at the same moment . Leakage usually is in one area.
