Default Try the '04-05 sporty "flash" upgrade?

I was just informed by a person on these forums about H-D bulletin 1162 which talks aout a reflash to change the timing on 04 and05 sportsters (1200 and 883).

Has any one had any experiences (pos or neg) with this?

Any other info you can give on this? Is it usually free?

I'm proably going to call my HD store tomorrow to ask.

Thanks

Are you sure you are talking about the correct Service Bulletin?

HD Service Bulletin M-1162 was issued on October 20, 2004, but has nothing to do with the timing on Sportsters.

It consists of a software flash to correct an inaccurate speedometer reading on some models.

In summary, the Bulletin states that if the part number printed on the ICM isn't either 32478-04A or 32622-04A the software upgrade should be performed to correct a possible error in your speedo reading..

OFG, you are partially correct.....

M-1162 is about an updated ICM Strategy as well as a PPU update.....

The ICM strategy is updated spark maps....

The PPU update is for a reduced chance of the speedo "Running away" at 75 when you are only doing 60...

There has also been two other updates since this one.....

32622-04C is now the current program that is to be installed.....

How do I know..... My 04 883 just had it installed in May when I liberated her and brought it up to speed......

The ICM strategies are only good for the 2004-2005 Carb'd bikes... with the "Stock" ICM No's 32478-04 or 32622-04....

Yea that about what takes place with that reflash, and in laymans terms what shovehead bob said about "an updated ICM strategy" translated means the ignition control moduel is reflashed to change the ignition timing. That helps with off idle performance and all around driveability and backfiring through the carb. Yea plus it does fix the speedo too and is 100 percent free.

Here is a link to the Service Bulletin M-1162

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/...2ICMUPDATE.pdf

From reading this it appears that the PPU (Pulse per Minute) portion will help to reduce the speedo overstatement on certain models, while the ICM Strategy will help to improve idle performance on Twin Cam (88/88B) bikes, and also on 2004 and 2005 Sportsters that were produced prior to mid September, 2004.

I had the M-1162 update done, and feel it was a major improvement in the way my sporty runs. I have an '04 1200C with SE II slip ons, but no carb or air-cleaner upgrades.

BOB: Is there a service bulletin number for the upgrade to "C" software that you put on your 883?

No ServBull on it, as our shop policy is to hook up ALL bikes and validate the ECM/ICM status, and apply the updated flash, providing the bike has not been race tuned, stage flash or running a "Modem Fuel Modifier" (PC/DFO/FuelPack)......

Same goes for the H-K Stereo system......

We are obligated to ensure the bike has the latest and greatest software and programming, plus it actually clears up about 1/2 of the customer complaints, and makes my life a lot easier....

And if a shop attempts to charge you for it, you can tell them that the same rules apply to the -04C update as the -04A for shop reimbursement...

They are FREE updates, as per H-D.....
