Got a gas siphon pump from Autozone.
It got most of the gas out of the tank.
Unscrewed the petcock, and took it off.
I don't see a screen anywhere.
There is a plastic cylinder that will come down a few inches, but it doesn't come loose from the tank.
What next?

That is proabally the filter. Take the tank off the bike and rinse it out to get all the trash out. The filter should be attached to the petcock and should have come out with the petcock, if not find a hemostat and pull it out the tank. Tim

Gary....I believe there may be a vacuum line going to the fuel valve. This will only allow gas through the valve while the engine is running regardless of the valve position. doesn't mean the filter isn't plugged...

Put a new fuel filter in the tank a week or so ago.No change in what was happening.
Just now had a chance to mess with it some more.
Had tried a few times to start it,just for a sec, with no luck.
Tried today,no luck.
Checked and verified that yes I am getting good spark to the plugs.
Decided to take the air cleaner off and look around.
As soon as I got it off,I tried again, and it turned right over.
It does sputter some-I watched as some gas sprayed out of the little nozzle thing, and it sparked too big and spat.
It does seem to be getting plenty of gas-turn the throttle and it shoots more.

About 2 weeks ago, maybe,I went down to Brown's Cycles and talked to David Brown about it.
He was of the opinion that it was either a fuel/air mixing issue,or a carb issue.
I'm starting to think this is probably right-like,the carb needs to come off and be inspected, put new jets in,etc.

Is an S&S carb any better than the stock one?

i had similar problem with my bike.
to figure out if electrical or not.
next time bike dies, dont touch anything else beside plugs and wires.
pull plugs, push starter, and see if it cranks, it might crank, but have no spark.
if it doesnt crank at all, possible battery ground.
if it cranks, but does not spark, its in the electrical system/component.
if just one plug doesnt spark, itis plug or plug wire, change plug, if still no spark, its the wire.
if both plugs dont spark, but starter cranks, start with coil. check wires connecting coil, try jiggling these connectors, try to start again, and see if you have spark
follow the HD manual in chapter 7? i think. to test coil, then do the same thing with bank angle sensor and ignition module.

mine was a loose coil wire

That is something I did not think about.. Your bank angle sensor could be loose, or faulty. This sensor is located under the seat and mounted to the back facing side of the battery box. Its about 1" square. It is designed to shut the bike down if it exceeds a 55 degree tilt. A safety device incase you dump it.

Also, have you checked all Vacuum hoses and your V.O.E.S.?

Well,it's been a long time.
Hope ya'll are all well.
I never made a lot of progress on the scooter problem, for a multitude of reasons.
With the weather getting better, and gas prices escalating-OOUCH!!-,I finally took the bike to Brown's Cycle Repair,Inc. in Dallas last week.
They found that these little seal things at the intake manifold and carburetor were hardened and allowing air in.Plus, the carb and jets were in just nasty shape. There was also 1 bad vacuum line.
The bike had sat up for a while before I bought it,and then I guess my experimenting around with pipes and air cleaners maybe made it worse.
Probably should have had the shop look it over real good before I ever started riding it.
Oh well.
It only took 13 bucks in new parts, plus a thorough cleaning up of the carb and jets, and now she purrs like a kitten.A large, mechanical kitten.
I had considered selling it,but after being able to ride it again-nah,I'll be keeping it.
See ya In The Wind,mang!!
