It is a direct bolt on. I made the swap the from a Iron tank(same as Nightster) to a Fourty-Eight tank.
Only thing different is the vent tube is further forward on the Fourty-Eight tank so you will have to shorten that hose. Other than that it is direct bolt on.
The Nightster tank will look tall on the Fourty-Eight, saw one over on the XLForum and looks kind of different with those low bars.
Here is mine

thanks, that will more than likely be the way i end up going except kick some different bars, maybe some 10-12 narrow apes. Think that would look killer.

man I LOVE youtube and forums. Planning to get a 48 but want to take some trips with it so the 2.x gallon tank isn't going to work for me. Easy fix: get the nightster 3.3 tank (I want the 48 because of the wheels, forks, foot control placement, etc and to change all that on a nightster is $$$). So I call a Harley dealer and ask how much to swap tanks... crazy expensive. that is after first telling me it might not be possible without a bunch of other modifications which would cost me even more.

Yeah... no.

So I use google to look up switching tanks on a 48 which brings me to this video:

now that's what I'm talking about! That's something I can definitely do at home. Why the @#$% would they tell me it would take so long, cost so much $, and need other modifications? Anyway, hope this vid helps others out there looking to swap tanks. I actually think I'm going to go with a tank with a high cap that another boardie recommended:

I just swapped the tank out on my 2011 48 for a denim black iron 883 tank and it looks awesome!
