There are a lot of good suggestions already here, but I'll add my $.02.
I had a similar issue with the bike losing power, backfiring, and cutting out. I replaced / tightened EVERYTHING. Ultimately, it was a defective ignition switch. The switch would go momentarily off (even though the key was still in the run position.) I was finally able to isolate it because as soon as I felt the bike start to lose power & backfire, I reached for the key and turned it more towards run and the symptoms cleared for a short while. I replaced the switch and the bike has been trouble free since.

Mine drops to 0 while riding. What's this power problem you speak of?

I had a puppy once that would stop (and sit down) when I walked him...
turns out he was just tired and wanted to be carried, maybe your bike is the same way...
prolly not much help, but it got me another post closer to 2000...

sc413,

What year is this bike? Does it have circuit breakers, or fuses, or relays? Maybe it would help if we were all on the same page when it comes to describing electrical components from different years of bikes?

The older bikes just have circuit breakers. And a starter relay. Mine has four circuit breakers, and a starter relay that is maybe inside the headlight, my FSM is vaque on this.

Now they use fuses, and I guess some other types of relays too. And something called a maxi fuse, whatever that is.

John

Ditto, same problem here years ago on my 2006 1200C. I used to have all my keys and key fob dangling and blowing in the wind from the ignition and it just wore out the ignition switch contacts. Now I only put the key in the ignition and keep the rest of the junk in my pocket.

the same thing happened three time with me , just got a 98 ultra classic it just died on the road going on 40 mile . couldn`t figure what is wrong , went in a parking lot and waited couple minutes and then start it again .. today i toke the bike out for a ride and the same thing happened again twice but the bike starts again .. not sure what is it now i will check on the ground wire and see but in the other hand if the ground wire or cable is loss the bike wont be able to start in the first place and the starter will just fast click trying to start. the bike starts from the first push on the start botton when the engine is cold but when it get hot it shot off i guess

I had a similar problem with my '08 xl1200n after doing some intake and exhaust changes. It wasn't a power issue, but rather a fueling issue; it had a tendency to suddenly idle rough and die while in low rpm's. was fixed with a power commander and dyno tune.
