Default How to tell a 883 with a 1200 conversion kit?

How can you tell if a 883 has a 1200 conversion kit or not? The cylinders say 883 but if it has been bored, how can you tell? Compression test? Or? Without pulling it apart to find out.

The jugs might look different.

Does he have a work order?

The 1200 conversions run a lot better than the 883's. I helped my friend do his, and it made a BIG difference. And he let me ride it

without paperwork or ripping it apart, you'll have to make an educated guess. of course the 1200 will outperform the stock 883 by a noticeable difference, BUT...the difference narrows if the 883 has a stage one and agood tune. You'd need to be pretty familiar with the overall output on an 883 to know for sure with a "seat of the pants" measurement. The other option would be to dyno it
As for it "running" better...not necessarily. it'll just have more power. Physically, they are the exact same bike, even the cans. the 1200's are just bored bigger. there is differences in the gearing, but you can't see that, and it wouldn't likely have been changed with a big bore kit.

I read this:

1. Add 300 ml ethylene glycol to 300 ml Dot 5 brake fluid
2. Remove the rear cyl spark plug
3. Insert a wooden or plastic probe
4. With the motor in top gear use the rear wheel to rotate
the motor until the probe shows bottom dead center
5. Elevate the rear wheel by 0.76 meters
6. Carefully pour the fluid mixture into the spark plug hole
7. If you use it all up your bike is a 1200. If there is
158.5 ml left over then it's an 883.

One idea that I seen in a thread here is to put a stick in the plug hole til it touches the cylinder wall and measure how far it is. 1200 will go in farther. Don't remember what the measurements were but they were listed in that thread.

ride it...if you change gears super quickly, (ie go up through the gears very quickly becaues you have to, not because you want to) then chances are it's a 883 converted to a 1200

Anyone here remember this thread? Or ideas for a search? This seems simple enough.

You can't tell unless you've ridden both before.

I don't remember anything about it to make it stand out in a search other than the question was the same as yours. I think it was posted this year.
