The following website has something like Big Al mentioned to assist in using the stock "cruise-control" set-screw.

The thing on the steering wheel is usually slanged as a "brody ****," although I have heard them called suicide ***** as well. All trucks used to have throttle locks, but now you only find them on those that actively use PTOs, such as dump trucks, gravel slingers, flow-boys, etc.
I drive a dump truck and it HAS a trottle lock. It helps when raising the dump bed. If I didn't use it it would take 3-5 times longer to raise the bed. I have also heard the steering wheel ***** called " necker's *****" before

It isn't cruise control - if its set tight enough the throttle won't snapback but trying to use it as CC you'll be constantly tweaking it slightly for every hill, cager etc.
I agree with others that have mentioned it is handy for giving the right hand a quick break on those long days though.

I have a permanent cruise control lock. Since I've changed my grips to Kuryakyn ISOs, the throttle stays locked in position unless I manually change it. I've put on over 7K miles since changing the grips and I haven't had any problems while riding.
I'll probably look into it during the offseason, but as long as I'm aware of the situation, I don't think it's a major problem. I've adjusted just fine.

I use mine occasionally, but ya know...I don't remember using it on my 2008 seven state trip through Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, barely into California, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. When I do use it, it's to give the right hand a rest and keep the blood circulating, but I'd much prefer a lever like the above mentioned Throttle Mate or any of the others.
