...weather or not the rear shocks off a 1200s can be rebuilt?

I would just get some RG or RK air shocks, you can get them cheap and they greatly improve the ride. Do a search for air shocks and you will find a ton of info.

There's not much point in rebuilding, what was junk to begin with.
Get a set of Progressive 412's or some touring bike air shocks.

Weren't the 1200S shocks fully adjustable remote reservoir type? The crummy touring bikes shock would be quite the step DOWN. Comfortable do not = better if performance is your goal.

As far as rebuildable???? sorry, can't answer that one.

progressives or works performance would be better choices, imo...

A friend of mine just got a 1200s. It has standard Sportster shocks on it.
The 1200S shocks are fully adjustable and greatly contribute to makeing the Sport what it is.
I found a pair of stock sport shocks, the ones that should be on it for $150 off a 2000 model.
If they ARE re-buildable I think he should go for it, if they are NOT re-biuldable... then why buy 10 year old shocks with unknown mileage on em?

if you want to do everything you can to keep the bike stock, then i agree that rebuilding makes sense... that or if you really just love the ride of the stockers.

my stock shocks were adjustable, but not easily. my works are so much easier that no tools are needed- just turn the top of the shock to the setting you want (by hand). and they turn easily. i can adjust for various weights. and actually the works are custom built for the rider weight. if you ride +2 then just tell them and they will give the shock a range of settings to accomodate your "normal" weights on the bike. when i upgraded, i also went a bit longer to get more play. gives a much more normal ride than my stock shocks (easily bottomed those out and they were never comfortable for 2 up).

Dennis Kirk has progressives for $209, I just put a set on my 883, huge difference.. I did also switch from the stock 11" to 13" progressives.

From what I remember when I had a set on my bike I don't think they were rebuild-able . I have ohlins shocks on my bike now but I thought the s shocks worked great . And for what you could pick up a set of low mileage used s shocks I thought they were a excellent upgrade to the stock roadster shock.
