Forty-Eight tank Re-do

Looks like there are several threads about how much the stock 48 tank paint scheme sucks. What would you do to your tank if you had the chance to do what ever you'd like? I'd like to get your thoughts. Colors etc. Any photoshoppers out there?

Nothings wrong with the 48 tank. I replaced my Iron tank with a 48 tank. Looks like a lot of guys are going a solid color like the flake tank offered from Harley or they are trying to mimic a older vintage stock tank. To me the old sportster script looks good.

I've had my 48 barely a week and the tank is already off and at the painters getting stripped, repainted and pinstriped.

Nothing against Sportsters as I've had two of them in the past, but I absolutely despise the humongous SPORTSTER logo that covers the entire side of the little 2.1 gallon tank on the 48.

If Harley was trying to capture the essence of a '50's bobber, what the hell were they thinking? The big logo looked stupid on 1970 Sportsters and looks even stupider on the 48. At least that is my opinion...YMMV.

As others have said in another thread, maybe Harley did this to sell a bunch of the pricey metalflake tanks they are offering. $400 + $100 to strip the existing tank + a 13 week wait...that's what the dealer told me as he was trying to get me to buy the 48 on the showroom floor that had a $1200 upcharge (!!!) for a metalflaked Nightster tank. No thanks.

Anyway, that's why some of us are repainting our tanks. I'll post some pics when I get the tank back on the bike.

As of next wednesday I will have a new Flame tank for my 48....only problem...I dont have the 48 yet....but have all the parts I am going to change when I do get it....It will come home from the dealer and be modified as much as I am going to modify it before it sees the light of day the next day.

Are they stickers on the 48 tank or is that paint?

grancuda 01-07-2011 03:43 PM

It is paint.
Also, I have yet to see a repainted tank that I would want on my bike. Maybe just plain black would be fine.

Allways been a fan of traditional flames. Also like scalloped tanks.

not much a fan of the big sportster graffix either,
I like the sedona orange, so decided to keep it that way, just had some playing cards airbrushed onto the top of the tank,

I like the Black

Its a sticker...the tank is painted, the sticker is applied, and then it's all clearcoated over.

ETA: I plan to have my tank painted...but Im not sure how and what colors. I want to stay with something sorta old school and traditional. Perhaps a black tank with gold leaf scallops.
