Default 2000 sporty cutting out

My 2000 883XLH while cruising at about 60mph abrubtly stops running as if 1. electrical no spark present to ignite boom-pop in cylinders or 2. carb no fuel being delivered. This incident has occured 2 times on the road and 2 time sitting at the stop light. Always cranked back up......till yesterday when it stranded me and after repeated attempts to crank after turning over and over and......I called for help and they brought my trailer. Fuel filter is clean, petcock is operable and original, smell of fuel is present during crank attempts. Oh yeah, when I got it home it cranked up so I drove it off the trailer. Problem is intermittent. Help, Thanks in advance!

It sounds like a short in the wiring. I'd look under the seat where the module is then go from there.

Check 1 and 2 and let us know what you find! It sounds as if your bike cranks over OK, so check all the electrical connections on the ignition circuit for being clean and tight, especially any grounds. Check the carb float bowl for being clean.

Yes, this sounds like a fuel or ignition problem. If you are confident the fuel system is good, then begin troubleshooting the electrical. Start at the battery and work your way out from there. Have you inspected the battery cables? The solution may be as simple as that.

Check the 90 degree angled "pinch" connectors at the trigger posts of the coil.

My 2000 Sporty did exactly the same thing. It was the ignition module. It's under the round cover at the right end of the crank. The heat gets to them eventually. For a couple of weeks I rode with the cover off and a can of "Freeze-It". It would die, I'd cool off the module and all would be fine for awhile. BTW, if it is the module it gets worse quickly.

+1 on this if the speedo is cutting out along with the engine. Remove pinch connector, give it a good squeeze to snug the pinch area back up & re-install connector.

But I've also had about the same issue when my vacuum hose dry-rotted to the VOES.

I had the same thing happen on my '95 sporty. After replacing the vacuum line, and doing a recall that the previous owner had never done, I would still stall. Turns out it was the ignition.

Thanks to all for your insight and knowledge. The beast continues to run and crank and run and .......Cannot find any shorts or vaccum leaks or loose connections. My plan is to keep Jamm'in the wind and hope for the best!

Maybe consider waiting for a cold day and let bike idle for a few minutes while you wiggle every wire hard to check for a bad connection.BOTH Battery cables at BOTH ends should be checked. Sometimes using a rubber hammer to tap various areas of the bike causing a vibration helps to isolate an "area" of concern.
