Default Another air cleaner. 5 1/2" covered (old school)

I posted a thread about a super cheap & easy 4" open element air cleaner and alot of guys liked it but I've received emails asking about something a little larger or something covered so here's an idea for the budget-minded.

It's basically the same job. I put this one on my Softail but it'll fit a Sportster exactly the same.

I got this from Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-BU...mZ270239233110

Just like the 4" deal, remove the flange on the back. Now, this one has a spout on the back side of the backing plate that can be used to route your crank case breather hoses to (so you don't have to use the filter that comes in the crank case breather kit). The carb mount I chose to use has the crank case breathers integrated so I'll be plugging this hole.

Marked the holes (same pattern as Sportster. They're both CV carbs)

On the 4" air cleaner I usually use the cotton air cleaner element that comes in the kit but this one comes with foam. I don't like foam. I sucked the foam filter 3/4's of the way down in the throat of my carb on my Nightster. No longer a fan. Plus, they can catch on fire!

I got this K&N from Jegs

And that's it. Here's the old school looking louvered hood cover.

Simple, cheap and cool looking.

Thanks!

Good work! I noticed you have no crankcase breathers...how do you go around it?

Nice...I'm actually in the process of doing the 4'' version right now. Waiting on the carb mount and breather to arrive but the initial worry was that the 4'' seemed a little small.

If I went with this one, I might plug up that extra hole in the back just in case debris gets in and accumulates but in terms of size, seems like it's the perfect round a/c.

On this bike I'm using this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHROM...Q5fAccessories

The crank case breathers are integrated in the mount. I have one on my Nightster too but I powdercoated it black. They work great.

That A/C looks like the one I got for my Sporty. Is that one still using the foam filter or did you find a K&N that fits in there?
