Start button keeps blowing fuses
 

About 1 month ago, I was at a local bike shop. I went to leave and I hit the start button and the starter engaged for a brief second and then nothing. All the lights worked and the horn, but it wouldn't turn over. I found out it was a blown fuse. I replaced the fuse and it has been fine.

But then today I went on a poker run and it did it again. I replaced the fuse and the first hit of the start button it blew the new fuse. I replaced it again and it worked fine the rest of the day.

Why is it doing this? Is the start button shorting out? Or is there a short somewhere in the system that keeps blowing the fuses? Untill I can figure it out, I guess I will just keep 10 or so fuses with me at all times. THANKS FOR ANY HELP

Have you installed new bars or messed with your hand controls recently? If so, a wire may be pinched....

I'd guess it's your starter or something beyond that keeping it from operating...and you're lucky to have the fuse preventing further damage. I've seen entire an harness melt down from a chipped tooth in the primary, that when stopped in just the right position, wouldn't let the starter actuate.

My bet would be a short in the wiring system somewhere along the line of the starter. It keeps blowing a fuse, so I would trace every wire back from the fuse to see where it was. All it takes is a little pinch, like streetfighter said, or a little bit of melt on the insulation from too much heat and it'll quit on you.

Makes me happy I don't have an entire ECM circuit :)
