Default Please help! Battery Charging on a 2005 Sportster.

So I am suppossed to leave tommorrow morning on a bike trip and my battery is dead. I jumped it and rode it around for awhile. Heres my question. Is it like a cart battery where if you run the vehicle it charges the battery? Or do I need to get a battery charger or bring it to autozone or something?&nbsp\\; Any help is appreciated.

The real question you should be asking is...Should I replace my battery and why is my battery dead? If&nbsp\\;I was going on a trip I would make sure it was good and if it was good then why did it go dead. If your battery is good then buy a small battery charger and charge it with it. Nothing worse than being 200 miles from home and a dead bike.

See if you want to invest in the "Battery Tender Jr." @$35.00, dealer should have it.&nbsp\\; And leave it hook up all evening before your trip tomorrow,&nbsp\\; When you come back, hard wire the pigtail to the battery so you can just plug it in and maintain the charge, esp. during off seasons.

Yes, riding it around will charge it up some, but the way I underatand it is you need to go @3000rpm for at least 10 miles before you have the battery charged properly.

Have fun on your trip and be careful.

I agree check first and you can get a tender at walmart for 25 bucks as for charging the batt with your bike an alt is not designed to charge a batt it is designed to maintain a batt.&nbsp\\;however i have seen it done the only down side is you can shorten the life of your alt. it is always best to slow charge your batt the good thing about the batt tend. is it charges slow and keeps the batt charged without cooking it for months on end&nbsp\\;

I was amazed at how soon mine ran down leaving the ignition on (run switch off) - Probably 40 minurtes and I was f***ed.&nbsp\\; I was on flat ground - I was able to spark it up pushing, &nbsp\\;releasing the clutch / hitting starter at the same time -&nbsp\\; West Virginia "kick start?"&nbsp\\; - I am sure I looked like a retard getting it started but I was able to gitterdone.

My dealer added a battery tender for $50 on my 2007 low without asking me and I told him I'd ask first if I wanted to buy one. I just found out today that they automatically add a pigtail for connecting the charger and if you opt out they remove your seat and remove the pigtail. What a bunch of Dicks! Anybody else know about the pigtails or dealer practices concerning supplying them "automatically" without telling you about it?
