Easy common mistake for people familiar with the older carbed bikes (pre 04). The plug wire placement didn't matter on those.

nickd23, I would strongly suggest that you get yourself a service manual before you do anything else.
wow thats quite the bold statment. i consider myself to be handy, pretty much rebuilt my whole house but im not the best technical motor guru i suppose. its thanks to good people who may know a little more about certain things then others that help each other out when they are in need. ambition is half the battle so to each his own but i wont even hesitate to start another project and figure it out along the way. ill leave the reading to you....

What did you do to correct it? Longer wires, flipped the coil, or changed the wires in the connector?

Default Didn't fix the issue for me

I'm so glad to see someone posted about this. What happened to Nickd23 is exactly what happened to me. However my bike is a 2014 Sportster 48.

I was doing a wire tuck, ignition and coil relation (both to the same place in between the engine heads), and a tank lift. I did the tank lift and wire tuck first. Everything worked fine. Then a few days later I got the new mount for the ignition and coil relocation. I put it on and reconnected everything the way it was and when I went to fire it up it turned over 3 times then popped with a spark and burning smell. I rechecked ALL the wires and connects then tried it again and it did the same thing but this time backfired instead of popping.

Then i found this forum post and thought i was saved. I went and switched the spark plugs but it did the exact same thing.

Any thoughts? I really don't want to push this thing to Harley only to have them charge me a few hundred buck for a simple fix.

Thank you for you help!

If you're flipping the coil the way it appears that you are, you need to repin the connector to switch the front/rear....
My 2013 works perfectly after repining....
