Default 1995 XL1200 Build thread

Hi, guys! I'm new to this forum and to Harleys in general. So any help or advice are highly appreciated.

I dared to buy an old Harley with just 5000 miles on it. Bought it for just $900. Obviously, the previous owner didn't care much about him. But I'm sure in a couple of weeks I'll bring this stallion back on the road!

Here are a few pix from the auction and the trip to the shop, where I left him to sleep on a bike lift. Tomorrow I'll begin to disassemble him for cleaning, greasing, sandblasting, powder coating, changing tires, belts, gaskets, etc, etc, etc.

Well done, looks to be the same Candy HiFi blue of my '90 Glide. Before you get yourself too deeply into dismantling it I strongly recommend getting the factory service manual. That will help you with any problems or repairs you encounter along the way. Your local dealer can supply.

Congrats!!
Any '95 for that price is probably worth it.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do to it, but it's going to be a little tough to read if you keep calling it "him."

I also strongly recommend the FSM and parts manual.

Well it's definitely a boy)) Ok, I'll stop confusing people. Already got Cyclepedia Press LLC H-D Sportster Online Service Manual for it. The hard copy will arrive in about a week.

Day 1. Had just a few hours after work before midnight, but the progress is already visible. The bike is almost striped. Just the front fork left for tomorrow.
Wiring is marked. Disassembling process was photographed thoroughly
Will start to sorting parts tomorrow: what is trash, what will be refurbished, painted, upgraded, etc.

Wish I had that much space to work on my bikes! Looking forward to seeing what you have in mind.

Day 2. As I thought, I would need to order everything that is made of rubber: tires, hoses, maybe the drive belt. Not sure yet, since it looks fine to me. I'm just worried that I would be stuck in the middle of nowhere simply because I decided to save 150 bucks on a new belt. A stingy person pays twice, right?

Whoever owned this bike before didn't care much about it. Poor thing(( Oil was darker than coal!

I sealed all passages that lead inside the engine to pressure wash it tomorrow after soaking in oven degreaser for an hour. The frame too. Should be good as new.

Started to sandblast all visible parts. I want them to be matte black. That a hell of a paint they put on it up there in Milwaukee! Will stand a nuke blast for sure! It took me almost six hours to get rid of paint on just a few things.

Red face

Your belt could be 22 years old - I recommend you replace it. There's no point going to all that effort and expense, new tyres and everything else, then popping the belt with your first wheelie.....
