Oil leaking from air filter - Sportster 07
Hi to everyone , I am new to this Harley thing . Just bought my first bike in 40 years and got my license last week. Apart from a sore **** the only problem I found so far is oil seaping out of the aircleaner , after pulling it off it is definately coming out there as the air filter is covered in oil at the bottom , it has spewed a bit out as it is all over the side of the engine below the air cover. I have picked up some threads from 2007 and they mention this can happen (nature of the beast - but it should not ) particularly if you ride it above 70mph for a while . I have only been up to 70 for a combined period of about 5 minutes over the last 3 months - I ride at speed limits mostly about 40-50. Can anyone advise what I should do here - do i need to worry about this ?
I have a 2007 injected Sportster 1200r , it only has 5,000 miles on the clock
all advice appreciated.

You most likely have too much oil in it. Check oil level with your bike hot and on the kick stand. Oil level should not be above 1/2 way up dipstick. i keep mine between 1/4 & 1/2.
When you change oil, you should only need to put 2.8 quarts back in, and that includes the 3 or 4 ounces you put in the oil filter.

As stated - oil level is likely too high. The oil comes from the two hoses attached to the tops of the cylinder heads, they are crankcase ventilation. All piston engines leak some combustion gases past piston rings. These gases pressurize the crankcase and pick up engine oil mist as they leave via the crankcase vent. The crankcase vent in this case runs right into the air intake on your Sportster, and the oil accumulates on/in the filter. Eventually it drips. An excessive amount of oil contributes to the mist in the crankcase as it splashes around the gears and what not. Lots of folks with Sportys have reported this same thing. Big diesels usually have filters that recapture this oil mist and put it back in the crankcase before it is vented back into the intake.

Hi guys , thanks for the messages - I checked my oil level hot and it is bang on half way so am assuming I probably have now got it to the level it should be. I will take it from what all have said it is not a real problem and there would be no need to take it to a dealer !!
