Default Crane Cams Fireball HI-4TC

New Sportster owner. I bought an 05 1200 Custom and the previous owner included a Crane Cams Fireball Hi-4TC ignition module. The installation seems easy enough and the literature seems to make sense.

Has anyone here ever use this product and from your experience, did it improve engine performance as advertised? What sort of improvement did it give your engine if any?

Thanks in advance.

Not trying to tell you what to do friend, but honestly I'd ride the bike out first, make sure there isn't any other hickups that you don't know about yet, give 2 or so months and then get on the performance side of things, I'd focus abit more on bars, etc... to get comfortable with it 1st. Hope you don't take this the wrong way. Best Wishes. -Joe

@joe - none taken. I was just asking the question about it, because I did not get much of an explanation about the product from the previous owner. I can read the company literature on it but of course it's gonna be the best thing since white bread. So just wanted to find out if anyone else had experience with it.

I have logged 400 miles on it since I got it a couple of weeks ago. I plan on riding even more as weather permits. I'm not jumping in to changing everything about it. I just have many questions and I'm seeking the answers.

Thanks,

jd

I added the Crane Hi 4E which is a similar ignition module replacement.

The module will allow you to adjust the cylinder firing offset, set an RPM limit higher than a stock module, allow for a hotter multi-spark, and should have the option of single fire, or double fire to allow for use of twin coils (supposedly a bit better way to spark a Harley than stock).

What I experienced, beside the fact I needed to replace mine due to intermittent failures, was a lot quicker throttle response, smoother running (actually changed the sound of the motor), better quicker starts.

A stock module limits your revs, the crane allows for a setting of your choice. I set mine at 5,700 rpms and this allow me to hit 5 grand smoothly. My stock module was preset at a limit of 5,200 and my motor would fall off at about 4,500 RPMs. Stock motor your safe up to a little over 5K. There's a lot of power between 3 and 5 grand and to hit that curve without it falling off (reaching max rpms and the engine dies) give your ride a lot more top end. My top end moved from 92 mph to 105 mph and it gets there a lot quicker!

It CAN improve your performance. However, it can just as easily hurt your performance or even cause damage to your engine if not set up properly. To take full advantage of it's capabilities it will require spending some time on the dyno to find the best initial timing and timing slope for your setup.
