I'm about to order some apes for my '11 iron. I was told by a local mechanic that there were problems with bending with 1" bars?
I was going to order some burly brand 12" and was wondering if anyone has had any problems with 1" bars or if i should look for some 1-1/4" bars with 1" reductions.
Not sure what your mechanic was alluding to, but there's no overarching problem with 1" bars. Some bars from different manufacturers are recalled from time to time for potential weld cracking (HD Bombay, Santee Bonanzas off the top of my head), but this isn't specific to any certain size of bars.
I had 12" apes on mine for years, and later drilled/slotted them for internal wiring. Never a problem. Only switched them out because I wanted taller bars. 1 1/4" can look kind of funny on a narrow glide 39mm front end, but some styles do look pretty nice. I have 1 1/4" bars on my Street Bob.

When I get the throttle cables for my Chubby bars, I'll let you know. They do feel heavier and more solid than what HD produces.
