Default Insurance cost for 883 vs 1200

My son is is looking at a early to mid 2000 sporty. I would like to know if anyone knows if insurance is more on the 1200 vs 883? I seem to recall that somewhere above 750cc insurance gets more costly, and to boot he's a 20 yr old college student. Maybe some younger riders could post up what their payments are???
Thanks in advance...

He's screwed either way at that age...
I was +25 when i got my bike so i can't say for sure, i know it didn't matter XXXXcc-wise as long as it was a 'cruiser' and not a 'sport bike'. I think the biggest cost factor was the overall cost of the bike and how much coverage you wanted. Replacement/repair costs should be negligible on a 883 or 1200.

For basic full coverage with progressive, non uninsured underinsured I pay $23 a month.

Recently upped it to 15k/30k uninsured/underinsured and towing for like $33 a month. I'm 24.

I went with Progressive and I believe if it's under 900 cc's it's cheaper.

Yes, there is a cost difference for insurance between the 883 and 1200. I believe the cost difference cut off is 999 cc's though, and could possibly vary per state. Once you hit the 1000CC mark, it goes up. 883's with the 1200/1250 conversion only pay for 883 cost per the title. I can't remember what I paid for insurance for mine back when I was in my 20's for full coverage, but I know I'm only paying around $325 for the full year with full coverage to cover medical of me & passenger/theft/etc through State Farm.

So buy a 883 and upgrade it to a 1200.

This.

Though it could be worse, you could live in Canada. For my 883 (with kit), I pay about 2500/year @ 24 years old.

Yes, there is typically a higher rate for >999cc if you're under 25yo.
That said, insurance rates vary wildly not just from state to state but down to zip codes within a state. You're not going to get much in the way of accurate insurance cost info as it pertains to your personal situation on a internet forum. Your best bet is to call several insurance companies for specific quotes.
