amsoil 20w50 for primary/ transmission
hi i have a 08 sportster with almost 7500 and im about to change the primary and transmission oil in it and was wondering if it is alright to use amsoil. I wasnt sure when the guy who owned it before changed it so i figured i would just change it now before i start riding.

Yes,it's OK to use it, but if you're using Amsoil, they make a 75-90 Gear Oil that's better suited for the primary/tranny.
All motor oils contain an additive package that's designed to deal with the nasty combustion by-products in the motor. This additive package is useless in a gearbox. Gear oil contains an additive package which is designed to deal with "molecular shearing" which occurs in gearboxes.

K. This guy posting above obviously doesn't realize that gear oil contains molybdenum disulfide which is fantastic in the big twin trannies but they are separate from the clutch/primary.
Using gear oil in a sporty will cause clutch slip. Do not listen to the above post. If you were riding a big twin with 3 different holes then I would agree 100% however a sporty shares a common fluid for tranny and primary.
I have had good luck with rotella in my primary. It's JASO approved for wet clutches and the shared sump jap bikes seem to have good luck with it.
The amsoil 20w-50 will work in your application. Go ahead and use it.
Many members are using it in all 3 holes in the big twins with good results.

I love the Am's in my engine use the 20-50 it's great stuff, have tried it in my prime/gear, also tried a genaric gear oil, and Harley Formula+, by quite a ways the Formula+ was quieter and shifted smoother. So for me Am's in the Motor, and HD Formula+ in the other two holes. Too each his own, you will get 100 different opinions on this subject. I took the time and money and did the research live, and dropped my fluids after every 200km ride for two weeks to see what I felt worked best for me.

Amsoil Gear Oil, that I recommended, has no molybdenum and neither does Mobil-1 Gear Oil or HD's Formula+ Gear Oil (which is now the primary/tranny oil recommended by the MoCo for Sporties).
BTW, 80,000 miles on my bike, original clutch, all running Mobil-1 75-90 GEAR OIL.
