Ok so I jump on the bike after work throw the ignition switch set the choke and hit the starter button and the starter spins but does not turn the motor over. Hit it this morning and nothing seemed abnormal. What could this be and can it be rebuilt or do i need another starter.
Bike is still in work parking lot push starting did nothing but skid rear tire, motor does turn over if put in gear and pushed just not enogh weuight and or speed to get it to turn and fire off when trying to push start. Any help would be great.
if the starter spins but doesn't engage it is most likely just the starter drive. If u need to push start it try starting it in 3rd or 4th gear and let the clutch out.
sounds like the starter drive to me to (sometimes called the bendix) ...it will continue to get worse...and as far as push starting it, try putting it in 3rd gear instead of first...give it a good push and pop the clutch, when it starts pull the clutch back in and give it enough gas to keep it running...
Well got the bike back to house this afternoon. Guess ill be pulling the primary cover and try to see what is going on. I am having a diffucult time finding a new starter though itnseems they are no longer avaliable from harley andbthe terry ones are also not avaliable on jp or denniskirk this may become a pain in the a$$
On a Harley the bendix is called the Starter Clutch. It's a fairly common failure item on 1200's, especially in hotter climates, often between 12,000 -15,000 miles.
The real fix is to replace the entire starter with a 1.4KW "All-*****" brand starter. They run around $270.00 last time I looked. Or, you can replace just the stock starter clutch for around $50.00 and plan on doing it again, and again, and again......
