Default Sportster XL1200C Speed Sensor Voltage

Am changing the stock speedometer on a 2006 XL1200C Sportster to an aftermarket which requires a 12v sensor. Bought an aftermarket speed sensor and it doesn't work. I'm bypassing the ICM/data bus wiring and wiring the sensor directly to the speedo.
I think the reason is that the sensor is too short and the air gap between the sensor and the gear teeth is too big so it's not picking anything up. (tested all the wiring and power and ground and everything is good except no pulse from the sensor when it is on the bike)

From searching around, it appears that Harley changed to databus in 2004 and when that change was done, the speed sensor was also changed from 12v to 5v. But would like to know if anyone can confirm that because I pieced this information together from various sources.

So I'm thinking that if I get a stock sensor for a 2003 - before the change to 5v and databus - as long as it is the same length, that should work.
Looks like the part number would be 74402-95B (can't find any changes to the part number in between that one and 74402-04 which is for a 2004)

Can anyone think of any reason that wouldn't work?
