Default Softail rear pulley on 1200

Will a 66T narrow belt Softail rear pulley fit on a newer 1200 to replace the 68T. Anyone done this to lower cruise RPM's. Will the current belt still fit?

The best way to lower Cruising RPMs is to put a tooth or 2 larger pulley on the front.

But, you didn't give us any info about your bike. So we can't give you info on which front pulley to use.

No, your current Sportie belt will not fit on the softail pulley. The Sportie belt is wider. As xFreebirdx said change the front pulley.

Depends on the special Softail model you are talking about, as the final drive belt width varies depending on year and model.

Some Softail run 1.0" final drive belts, others run sizes up to 1.5"..

The Sportie is a 2008 1200L and the Softail pulley is also a 2008 for a 1" wide belt.

Hi: Here is some info from my service manual;
Final drive sprockets
(transmission-to-rear wheel)–1993-2003 models
Number of sprocket teeth
Transmission sprocket
883 models 27
1200 models 29
Rear wheel sprocket 61
Ratio
883 models 2.26:1
1200 models 2.10:1

I also have articles about the effects about changing front and or rear gears if you want to read PM me. The largest front gear I have been able to find for a sportster is 30 teeth which if you have a 29 tooth will reduce engine rpmby about 6%. Larger gears are only speced for the larger twins. Please keep me up to date on your hunt for rear pulleys.

Other than checking belt width, you may want to check the pulley offset from the wheel. If it's not the same, it won't line up with the front pulley.

Some Softails have pulleys with the same 1.125 belt width as the Sportster. The key is to get one with 65 teeth rather than 70; one of those, coupled with a 30-tooth front pulley, will significantly drop RPM at cruising speeds. Changing the front pulley alone won't make much difference on a 1200, as 30 teeth is the largest that will fit without internal case modifications.

As for alignment, V-Twin markets spacers for that purpose.

Does anyone know the part number for a 65-tooth 2000-05 1.125-inch Softail pulley? I've been looking, but all I've come across are 70-tooth units.
