Default Very hard to shift into neutral, 2nd and 3rd

Hey all, I am new to hdforums and this is my first post.

I have an 85' Ironhead and I am having a heck of a time shifting from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd. It is also extremely tough to get the bike into neutral. The other shifts are smooth and easy it is just these lower gears that are tough. Any ideas of how to resolve the problem? I do not have a clutch adjustment at the handlebar, only on the engine.

regards,

Mark

Pull Clutch Basket and inspect, groves are bad.

Every Harley I have owned, including a '74, had an adjuster in the cable. The routine is adjust at the clutch, with the cable adjuster slackened right off, then adjust the cable. Sounds as if you could use a service manual and the correct cable!

Agreed. get a service manual and adjust the clutch, if that don't help, check the primary adjustment. Once you get it right, don't lug it, Sportsters HATE being lugged.
