Default Softail Fatboy Tank on a 2003 Sportster

Hi,

I registered here because I found this site useful in past research. I am at the start of upgrading my 2003 Anniversary Edition Sporty to a 2003 Fatboy gas tank. I will be sharing the details in case there are others that want to try the same. So far, I have a mint condition 2003 Fatboy tank from eBay. I confirmed that with some adapter brackets to lower the front mount about 2 inches, it will fit great. Seat location is OK. I will need to relocate the ignition coil. I plan to mount between the cylinders below the choke. Ignition key also must be moved. This will be incorporated into the gas tank ignition switch that comes with the Fatboy.

I plan to keep my speedo and replace the Fatboy one with the Tachometert Kit Number 67182-95D. To fit the smaller diameter gauge, I bought J&P adapter
560-013
SPEEDO ADAPTOR RING

I will post more details and pictures as they develop.

Anyone that had done this already with any suggestions?

If you look at the XL forum, there's a thread on there where a guy mounted a Dyna tank, lots of good pix of the brackets he made etc.
Superglide tank conversion

For relocating your coil and ignition, have at look at DK.

I'm interested to watch your progress, take lots of pix

Thanks for the info. I was doin Burley 16" ape kit install this weekend on a friends Nightrain. We had to jack the tank to get to the wiring to do the extensions. As I was looking at the tank, I was thinking that it wouldn't be too terrible a deal to switch to the Nightrain tank. That thread on the XL Forum is great.
