Default 98 Sporty cutting out

Hey y’all. Having a weird issue that came out of no where. Bike starts and idles fine. But once engaged to ride, sporadically it’ll completely shut down.

For example, road to work yesterday no problem. When I’m heading home after work about 5 miles in it stutters and shuts down. No lights no anything. Turn the key off then right back in again, everything’s fine. Engage to drive the rest of the way home, cuts off again. I fiddle w the ignition switch a bit and take the seat off to see if there’s anything oblivious..nothing I can really see at that moment..fire the bike back up and get home no problem.

Now this morning it cuts off before evening getting out of the drive way, but still idles and revs fine. Checked my battery and load tested everything is good there. Digging through the bike now to find the grounds. Any other suggestions? Could it be the ignition switch itself?

thanks in advance!

Battery connections at both ends. Ignition module might be fried.

Checked the battery connections. They look straight. Would the ignition module be intermittent like that?

There is a vacuum type switch close to the carb that a single vacuum hose plugs into. I heard if that goes bad you will have problems like you described. I can't think of the name of that part.

I had a bad positive battery cable. It was corroded under the insulation. Sometimes it was fine, then - nothing, no lights, no start. The ends looked fine.

I’ll check again. I think the weird part is when it cuts out, I just have to cycle the key once and it’s back to normal. Almost like it’s a breaker or something.

I would look at the ignition switch, may have some corroded contacts in there. Or check the connections going to the ignition switch.
