Dunlop D404 versus D401 tires

RE: Dunlop D404 versus D401 tires
OFG, I agree. I don't want to go cheap on tires, but if the only difference is the HD logo on the side, and that's entirely possible, I'd go with the 404's. That was my question. Does anyone know if they are the same tire or not.
It doesn't appear that we do. Dunlopisn't disclosing any difference in the tire. That could certainly be from pressure from the MoCo.
Dunlop doesn't want to lose their contract to provide HD with OME tires. Therefore, they don't disclose they have the same tire for less money.
But the one post that said they got half the milage from the 404's versus the 401's sounds like there might be something different in the construction.
So, where is a good source for 401's??

RE: Dunlop D404 versus D401 tires
This is where I got my front tire... no problems with the dealer... got it in a couple of days...

Oh... by the way... OFG turned me on to this site... when I couldn't find any tires local...
By the way... OFG explained the difference between the tires... one is bias ply... the other is fiberglas belted...

According to the Dunlop site, the 402 have 3 ply polyester castings with 2 fiberglass beltsbut the 401 doesn't say anything on the quantity of plys or what they arejust, that they arebias belted.
So I'm not sure the 401 and 402 are the same construction.
I would guess the 404 and 401 are similar with mystery plys .

the different series numbers with dunlop have different weight(load) numbers. the 402 has HD on it when bought through a HD dealer. when bought some place else, the HD logo is not there. you can always check the application by going to www.dunlopmotorcycle.com

For all of you that are of the opinion that there is no difference, look at the weight ratings. 404 rear = 677 lbs., 401 rear = 805 lbs, 402 rear = 827. Seems to me that the 404 is an inferior tire and you are going to get just what you pay for. My experience was that the 404 gets about 1/2 the mileage.
I plan to go with Metzlers in the future. This lack of supply due to a strike for the last 4 months has left me a little cold toward Dunlop.
Regards,
Bill
