Bot. a 93 883 Sportster and need to change the oil and transmission fluid. How do I do it? Do I refill the transmission thru the primary cover?

Remove drain plug and drain old lubricant.Remove two hex screws which secure primary chain inspection cover.Add 32 fluid ounces of H-D sport-trans fluid ( Part No. 99896-88) or equivalent through primary chain inspection cover opening.Install primary chain inspection cover.Tighten hex screws to 40-60 in-lbs.Pretty easy huh.I own a 1994 1200.Its pretty much the same bike.Oh and make sure you remove any foreign material from the magnetic drain plug

And don't confuse the Primary chain tensioner bolt with the primary drain plug. The tensioner is the one to the outside of the bike & has a locking nut on it. The drain is further in towards the center. At least on a '00 model.

As far as the engine oil, there is a hose under the rear of the frame that is actually clamped to the frame with a hose clamp. (the frame is the drain plug) Loosen clamp and remove hose to drain. Replace the hose, then change the filter, and refill the oil tank with 3 quarts of engine oil of your choice.

Question Thanks for the advice! 'Follow-up question!

Thanks! I really did not want to take the clutch cover off and mess up the gasket...clutch is fine, why mess with it?
I know there has been a lot of discussion, but, regarding:

"H-D sport-trans fluid ( Part No. 99896-88) or equivalent"

Please list "equivalents"...I want to change mine tonight with a syn or syn blend. AMSOIL would be my first choice, but not in the local auto parts store.
Would Mobile1 syn, 20w-50 or Mobile1 GL 75w-90 be the next best commonly available substitutes/equivalents?

Thanks again! -RBar
