One other thing to look at is the condition of the ground cable - on our XLs, they are infamous for corroding inside the sheathing at the point where the ground cable bolts to the frame.

It's either your stator, or your starter relay is on the way out. The starter relay is only 12.00 I would start there.

I did the starter relay. Nothing. Going to get the battery warrentied also. But it does read 12.7 off the bike. On the bike as soon as u turned the key it dropped. How do I test if the regulator is bad??

As cHarley laid out for you dropping below 12.7vdc, key on ,is too low.

Throwing parts at it / shotgunning it is expensive. You want to test some things with a meter before you start buying parts.

I suggested the battery because I figured you could warranty it, no cost, and start fresh, then do the measurements he suggested and see what you get. If those don't check out you need to do more checks. If you don't have the voltage you need at the relay that needs to be resolved 1st.

Electrical problems can be a PIA , you can also waste money on parts you don't need if your not sure whats wrong.

UPDATE:

I did change the relay before since I thought my battery was still good but I got the battery warrantied and it started right up. Reads 14.2 looks like everything is charging and working

Cool ,glad you got a fresh battery.

If it were me I'd keep an eye on it for a while and be sure you don't still have something discharging your battery , I think they might question you if that battery failed soon. It also could have been a bad battery , just check it here and there for a little while to make sure it's holding some nice voltage.

That's exactly what I planned on doing for the next couple of weeks before I leave for rides make sure it's charging and keeping a good charge also

After several stator failures, I was always nervous about whether the charging system was working or not. I installed one of these Battery Gauges and now have piece of mind.

They come in chrome or black and are around $40.00 from Kuryakyn.
