Default Can an 883 be "Hot-Rodded?"

Hi everybody,

I am on a Budget and want more power out of my Stock 2005 XL883C, with 14,000 miles.

First question:

Can I put a set of 2004-06, XL1200, Screamin' Eagle Pro, CNC Ported Heads, part #16500164, on my bike without a 1200 BB Kit?

Note: I think my 883 Heads are worn out and need Valve work...

Would this be a way to boost performance on my Scoot and cure my Cylinder Head Issues?

Second Question:

These Heads have a 59.9cc Combustion Chamber and have been Decked -.050. The stock 883 Heads are 49.9cc without Decking; so, does anyone know what my Compression Ratio would be with these new Heads and my Stock Cam Set?

I already have an Adjustable Dynatek, Single Fire Ignition Module, Accel Super Coil, Wires, and Plugs. Also, I have Cycle Shack Pipes and the SE Air Cleaner Kit, w/K&N Filter.

I was going to do a "Complete Top-End, Big Bore, Re-Build." But, I can't find a reputable HD Mechanic, that can do the Conversion for me, in my area (Carmichael, CA 95608).

Myself, I do have some Mechanical Experience from my Army Days (I was a 63C & 63Y, Tank & Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic). At home, I only have my Sears Craftsman Tools. I feel that I may be able to do a 1200 Conversion, but not sure...

The part that gives me concern, is the Connecting Rods. With 14,000 miles on my Bike, do I need to be concerned with the "Piston Pin" fitting in properly? Or, is this not a worry at 14,000 miles?

I purchased a used set of 2004 HD 883 Big Fin Cylinders and a new Wiseco Piston Kit #K1746, with the intention of having them Bored & Honed to the Pistons. But, I am having problems finding a Local Shop that I feel I can trust...

I have been to the Dealers in my area; they claim, that they can't do this because of CA Smog Restrictions. The Local Chopper Shops, that I have been to, have quoted me some great prices. But, when you talk to them, they tend to not have that much knowledge about what I want to do...

Also, I'm very picky when it comes to my Bike... I often get leary about letting just anybody work on my Bike. I wish I could find a great Bike Mechanic in my area...

Can anyone help with advice and knowledge?

Try posting these questions in the "Engine/Fuel/Intake/Exhaust" forum. I got good info there when I worked on my engine.

Good Luck

Putting those heads on the 883 jugs will do nothing. You need to have the heads match the pistons. Period. Your craftsman tool set is just fine, a manual, 12 point 1/2" socket and a tq wrench and you can do the top end yourself.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I think that I'm going to end up doing this Conversion myself.

My new plan is to build the Top-End.

This will mean that I can afford more parts, too!

Today, I won a set of new S&S Forged Rollers on eBay for $202.50; S/H included. I'm stoked, now. That was a sign... 100RWHP, here I come!!!

This is what I'm thinking about:

Note: I have a used set of 2004 HD 883 Big Fin Cylinders and a new Forged, 1200cc, Wiseco, Piston Kit #K1746.

Note: I need to find a local Machinist that can bore and hone my cylinders to the size of my pistons.

For Heads, SE Pro CNC Ported Heads.

16500164 CYLINDER HEAD KIT, CNC PO...Price: $809.91
For Cams, SE 575.

25740-05 SE PRO XL HIGH OUTPUT CAM...Price: $271.54
For Tappets/Lifters, SE Tappets.

18572-13 KIT-TAPPET,S.E./TWIN CAM...Price: $208.86

I also am thinking about purchasing the following items from Aaron Wilson, at Hammer Performance:

Aaron, at Hammer, recommends these Bronze Oil Pump Drive Gears for High Revving Late Model Sporty's

Bronze Oil Pump Drive Gear - $98
Fits 1991-Present Sportster and Buell

Sledge Hammer Extra Thick Mae West One Piece Hydralic Pushrods

2004-Up XL
2003-2010 Buell
(set)
Stock Length .065" wall $59.50 Stock Length .083" wall $64.50 .050" shorter, .065" wall $59.50 .050" shorter, .083" wall $64.50 Adjustable .065 wall $102.50 Adjustable .083 wall $107.50
Any suggestions?

I want more top-end, without loosing my bottom-end power. I think, about 90-100rwhp, should cure my ills...

My Bike struggles to keep up with my Bro's and their Hot Rod HD's; as is... This Summer, things are going to change...

Welcome aboard, just trying to help. The way your post is center format presented makes it real hard to read. I've helped out a few folks here before, but if it's hard to read, I can't be of much help.

Some of us read a lot of the postings and have either added, or more importantly, learned from others input and experience.

If you want to shoot for 90-100 HP, I think you'd be best off using a full Hammer 1250 kit. I think Aaron can get you into that range with reworked 883 heads, but you'll need to use all the right parts to go with them.

But check with him, other heads may be a better option.

I believe Madnss knows how to get 100+ to the ground too.

Might want to research more and talk to a few professionals before buying to many parts to make sure you have a good engine kit
