Default '08 sportster starting but starter won't stop spinning

So the starter on my bike is engaging when the bike is warm and the clutch is pulled in or it is in neutral. In neutral there is a continual grinding noise and when the clutch is engaged it grinds for a couple seconds then gives a whining sound untill the clutch is released. I've checked the starter switch and replaced the starter relay with no luck. Has anyone seen this before and can point me in the right direction so I don't have to spend money on parts that don't need it?

Thanks.

Not sure were the grinding noise is coming from, but sounds like you need a primary chain adjustment

I would check the primary chain adjustment, or at least check the freeplay. I'm assuming on a 5 year old bike your wiring is not ratted out, but maybe there is a loose connection or ground somewhere.

My old Ford Ranger had a starter that would sometimes not disengage and I had to pull the battery cable to get it to stop. Never did figure out what caused it. I changed relays and finally the starter, which ended the problem.

So found a wire from the starter that was too close to the engine and has started to melt and was causing some of the issues. Changed it's position and taped it so it won't short out and now the starter won't stop spinning. It isn't kicking the starter wheel out unless the switch is pressed but it just won't stop spinning unless you shut off the "Run/Off" switch. Is this the solenoid or starter itself that is causing the problem?
