What did you do to Your Sportster Today?

Rode up to my dealer to buy some new googles and check out what's new. Traded her in on a new Street Glide Special. It was hard to part with her after all the mods, and the fact that I love the look and riding her around town, and the huge expense, but the SGS was just too awesome. I will be finalizing the deal and switching bikes later this week when all the mods are completed. I'm excited, but I know I'll miss the sporty.
Finally finished every mod I could think of
and I love how it came out, but...
One I took it for a test drive...
I pulled the trigger

Well I bought the $20 hd oil filter catch funnel since last year I got oil all over everything.
Same GD thing this year. Soab. First the damn filter was on too tight. Ended up using my strap and accidentally tightening it on. That didn’t help. Finally big jaw pliers I was able to spin it loose. Put the catch funnel under it and... oil all over the floor. Guess it wasn’t far enough back or something? I read the directions and even did the XL mod. Then I pull the filter off and it pour into the funnel and then leaks over the edge making a second puddle. Ugggh!
oh well. Cleaned up and put oil in filter. Tightened up the nut that the filter screws onto (just a hair loose - probably from my tightening. Oil filter in, drain plug in, filled er up with 2 qts. Lil electric dip stick said 2 bars cold, rode around the block till hot and now it’s clicking between 2/3 bars, exactly where I wanted it. Also rebled the front calipers and zip ties the brake over night. Now it’s nice and tight. Ready for me to leave for a week lol

I would have bought that thing as well until cvaria reviewed it and found the same thing as you did. Amazon keeps "suggesting" it to me. Not drinking that koolaid.
btw: the tail light you recommended is working great.

Well it was only $20.
I DID see the one on amazon comes with a nail. Yep. A 4" nail.
You use that to puncture the oil filter and bleed it, then spin it 180 degrees and pop it again. THEN remove it with no mess. Next time I guess Ill try that first. HD said nothing of that, so ..

I have found my Sportster takes a full 3 qts to fill up, same for my sons Iron, it puts the oil level about 1/4" below the full mark when warm. I tend to run mine near or at the full mark since I vent the breathers under the bike.
When I installed the oil cooler filter adapter I also found the filter nipple loose. Seems to possibly be something everyone needs to look for when changing the filter.

Hi, my father has a 2002 Sportster XLH 883 that I'll be selling for him. I don't know much about this and he can no longer do any work on it. When it was serviced the chrome air cleaner cover was damaged and needs to be replaced along with the backplate. These parts are hard to come by so I thought I can give it a little upgrade with a new air cleaner kit. Any recommendations on a kit or maybe even just where to find the oem parts. I've looked on ebay and the covers I've seen are scratched. I appreciate any help I can get from you knowledgeable folks!
if if you start a new thread with your air cleaner question you may get quicker and more help kinda buried here.

Bought one of the Viking Solo Sportster bags. Finally got everything together to finish mounting it up.
I think it looks good, but I'm biased...
Viking supplies a piece of metal with a hole in each end to mount it with. One uses the front fender rail bolt, and the other bolts to the bag, then you use straps to secure it to the frame rail. I didn't want to use straps as the bag wouldn't be rigidly mounted, and I didn't want the straps to scratch the paint. I ended up making a mounting bracket that uses both frame rail bolts, and 2 other bolts thru the back of the bag to mount it. The bracket is hard to see as the turn signal mostly hides it from the side and from the rear it isn't really noticable.
I ended up taking the Viking logo off the bag, it was attached with a plastic washer and a screw. I had one of these Harley medallions left over from another project and it seemed to be the perfect thing to attach there. I drilled a blind hole .100" deep and tapped it to 4mm, and attached it with a button head screw.
The bag isn't very big, I was just looking for a little more space to carry stuff.
