Help... keep my Iron 883 and convert to 1200 or trade for a 1200 (48)?
Hi all,
I'm new to the HD world and I'm super excited to start modifying my stock bike. I recently purchased a used 2013 Iron XL883N with 1,500 miles for $7500 and after riding it a few times, I feel like I need more power (not a bigger bike) so I have decided to go with a 1200 but I don't know whether I should convert my Iron or simply trade it in for a 1200 48. Here are the details:
trade in value is about $6,500 and a 2013 48, with 5k mikes, will cost about $9,000-$9,500. I also like the 48's fatter front tire (and a couple of other little model differences) but I prefer the matte look of the Iron. So HARD to decide.
With the miles and price difference vs a proper conversion job (including gears I guess), which route do you PROs suggest?
Thanks in advance.

If you like your bike keep it and do the conversion. If you don't than trade for the 48. With the $2500 price difference it'd be cheaper to do a 1250 kit.. than again if you like the front end on the 48, it wouldn't be hard to paint the tins matte black. I'm no 'pro' but I'd save some by riding what I got as I'm not a fan of 2 gallon tanks either.

for 2500 bucks give or take you could have about a 100hp bike that is fun and reliable.

My initial HD was an Iron, but I quickly felt like I wanted something that would make the interstate portion of my commute more comfortable. Doing the conversion was over my skill level and I had little faith in my local shops, so I went the trade-in route and got my 48. I love my 48, but I also loved my Iron. I put the PowerVision canned flash and a 3.3 tank on the 48.
Looking back after a couple of years, I am unsure that it was worth it. If I were doing it again, I'd either keep the Iron and accept that it is what it is or get a bike that is better suited for the interstate. A Street Glide, Slim or Street Bob.

I like the 48 look (fat and low front end but the Iron color). Seems like its not impossible to make my Iron look like the 48.

Dude... don't take the hit at the dealer. I got a brand new 2013 48 in candy custom gold for 10-2 out the door. Sitting right next to it in the garage as we speak is my buddy's 2014 Iron. We've swapped. Slight difference. Just convert what you have. Unless you just won the lottery, don't burn more cash at the dealer. Convert what you have. 9500 for a used 48 with 5000 miles? Run like hell AWAY from that 'deal'...
