Anyone done a fat rear tire on a sportster?
 

Buddy has an older 883 and has been wanting to put a fat back tire on it for a while. Looks like a big challenge as far as doing a custom fender and swingarm. Anyone make a kit or is going to be a completely custom job?

lot of money, tire, rim ,modify swing arm, fender, maybe shock location then get drivebelt/chain clearance..etc etc .

then you have a bike that doesn't corner as well, and has less traction due to weight/patch contact.

in my opinion you spent a lot of money for the "look" .

I've seen guys fit a 200 in the stock swing arm. Get a new rim and had to convert to chain drive and offset pulleys. Of course they had to grind or chop rear fender struts. Choice is yours. I myself didn't want to do all that work so I put a Shinko 777 170-70-17. That's the biggest you can do without having to offset belt or covert to chain drive. It fit in the fender nice and filled up the back. The tire itself is better than the rock hard Dunlop. Better grip and cornering ability. Hope this helps.

Just for clarification, you may want to define "older". If it's a solid-mount Evo (pre-2004), those bike had narrower tires and (I believe) frames from the factory. From what I understand, a 150 is a squeeze on a solid mount. The rubber-mount came stock with a 150 and would be the bike that Raulgutz referred to with the 170 Shinko.

You completely ruin the dynamics of the ride when switching to a fat tire on a little bike like that.

Do you have a picture of your bike from rear? I'd love to see how that 170 looks. A 170 wouldn't need any modifications correct? Thats about as big as you can go before you need to start buying a big tire kit?

Sorry bud. I can't provide a picture. I left my bike at a budies house. But if you search 48 170. That is a thread a guy put the same tire on a 48 and that is where I got my idea from. After I measured I found out it would work for me too. But I'll add one to this thread as soon as I can

An associate has something like a 240 on his. I'll have to snap a photo and ask him about it next time I see it. It's a bit of a rat bike though. The seat is just a pan with no padding or covering.
