Default 98 883primary/trans oil change help

I found a great sticky thread with links to the info but none of the links actually work. Today I'm looking to do an oil change plugs and tranny/primary fluid change on my bike for the first time. Plugs and oil is easy enough. With that said I am not as confident or knowledgeable when it comes to the primary.

Does anyone have a video or thread or link that gives some instruction to replace the primary fluid in a sportster? I don't want to over fill let alone that I don't know where to fill the primary. Thanks in advance everyone.

the 98 if I remember correctly, has a plug in the bottom of the primary under the clutch area (towards the rear) ..to fill it you take off the big cover and with the bike level (I think) you add oil until the bottom of the clutch plates are in the oil..if I remember right it takes one quart or there abouts...while you are there you might want to adjust the primary chain...a little loose is better than too tight, but then not so loose the chain hits the cover when you drive...

After draining the primary you should adjust the clutch and primary chain per your service manual instruction. Easiest way to refill the primary is to dump one quart (32 oz.) of fresh 20w50 fossil (non-synthetic) into the primary chain inspection hole using a small funnel vs. trying to do so through the derby cover.

I have a 98 883 and I just changed my primary.

I drained the old through the drain plug. Then took off the small inspection cover with the two bolts in it and put 1 quart of SYN3 HD 20-50 oil in it. Put it back together and started it and checked for leaks. Real simple.

Snapped a couple pics off my bike. Again. 1998 883

Inspection plate is by the shifter

Good idea while the inspection cover is off to check your primary chain and adjust if needed

Thank you very much. I ended up having a rocker box gasket leak today that I had to fix. I plan on doing the primary oil and spark plugs tomorrow night. I really appreciate all of the help.
