Tuning process for a new modification.

While this is partly a rebuild / performance upgrade, I thing that it's more important to look at it from a tuning point of view.. There are already a bunch of guys doing performance upgrades. Don't need another one..

After about 40K of this last build (about 20K on the muffler change) and 80K on the motor I decided to pull the top end and go from a 103 to a 107 on my 07 EGC. Bike was running fine but I had a set to heads and a set of 197 cylinders and pistons that I wanted to try.

Bike was basically:

07 Electraglide Classic.
103 bore kit
Syke ported heads (off a 99 TC), 1.9 intake 1.62 exhaust.
55mm HPI throttle body.
Zippers AC
DnD Fatcat with quiet baffle.
9.9 to 1 CR.
Woods W777 cam.
Gen III Thundermax.

I swapped out the heads / cylinders and lifters to a the bike a 107.

I used some home ported heads that flow about the same as the Sykes. The main increases were from displacement and CR. Went from a 103 at 9.9 to 1 to a 107 at 10.4 to 1.. Heads were close in CCs but the squish went from 0.042 to 0.032 and coupled with the displacement increase CR became 10.4 to 1.

Since both the displacement increased and CR when up I expected that the fuel required would go up and that I would have to retard timing. Since Tmax auto adjusts AFR and the map was mature and very close, I used the same maps as before. Sine the CR went up 1/2 point, I knocked back the timing 2 degrees across the board after getting the motor back together.

Here are the parts.

I figured bump in CR would require the the timing change but I figure had what was a pretty good starting map.

After about 200 miles I found a slight ping as I rolled the throttle with the Rs between 2800 and 3400 rpm so figured I needed roll back the timing there some.. I stopped the ping and put another 500 miles on it.

Here is a pick of how the timing was modified.. The negative slope on curve is the roll on timing for 3300 but timing was backed off similarly from 2500 to 3800.

After that 500 miles I pulled injector PWs and looked at them.. In the areas of 2500 to 4500 were all adding fuel.. That a good sign as it mean the motor is likely making more power..

Green are learned offsets.

Learned offset report.

Tuning is pretty much done other then I can apply learned offsets and start making some possible tweaks to increase mileage.. No dyno, tho it wout be nice to check and peak the timing a little better.
