What the hell is this 'jiffy stand' business?

In Australia, it is called a "side stand", but here in the US I have heard it referred to as both a "kick stand" and a "Jiffy stand".
'Side stand' made sense to me as most older bikes (except H-D) had both a 'center stand' and a 'side stand', so there was a logical need to differentiate.

I would assume that the term jiffey stand came about when instead of getting of the machine and pulling up on the rear to set the center stand, the kick stand could be extended while still on the bike, thus "Done in a Jiffey".

Why it is called a Jiffy Stand
Originally, most bikes had a frame mounted 'center stand'. On many older HD models, there is a center stand attached to the inside of the rear fender requiring the operator to lift the whole back end of the bike to swing it into place under the frame, the "jiffy stand" was a quick easy method of standing the bike up without getting a hernia...the term jiffy stand was coined to distinguish the center stand from the side or "kick" stand as it could be used in a 'jiffy'.

At one time, the MoCo said they offered "panniers". Sounds like some kinda sissy-Frenchy-pinko picnic basket.... instead of a good ol' All-American saddle bag.
