Stopped by the loca, HD dealer to get a price on adding a 4 inch riser to my 05RK it has 12 inches mini apes, figured i's go up a few inches without getting a new handle bar.... Need new braided cables, ok i'm good with that plus the riser and new "cutout" cover for the nacelle....quote 7 hours of labor @$99/hr without any of the parts.....jeez..just to add a riser over 1 GRAND!!!

those who can;t or won't DIY are at the mercy of the dealer.

For something like that, I'd check with a good local indy shop. I'd like to have the front profile-low done to my bike, but H-D wants almost three times the parts costs for the labor. Can't say whether it's fair or not, but does keep it on my 'to-do' list rather then the 'done' list.

Believe it or not, the dealers are in business to make money. If you do not like their prices, do it yourself or find a shop that will do it cheaper.

THAT is precisely what I have been thinking abt lately!!

My HD just went up to $99/hr and charging MINIMUM hours that seem loooooooooonger than what it used to be.

ADD the above to this, the new HD Touring bikes seem to have gone up $5K-$6K for the SAME bike but with GPS and the infotainment thingy pretty much. Is THAT work another $5K - $6K????

I used to get a new bike every 3 yrs, now I am thinking no. I'll be over 100K but so what? It runs fine and gets all its service.

I'll get off 'me soap box now but u did bring up a gd point.

I plan to do 14" LA CHopper bars. Dealer wanted: ready for this? $1800.
checked 2 other custom shops in my area. one will do the job for $1100, the other custom shop around $1300-$1400. Sorry to say I don't know how to do this job myself & the bike being new. eh. just my luck I'd frig something up, so I feel your pain...

That's right in line with changing out a set of bars. There's a whole lot of tedious time involved in running the wires and such. Not a real easy or fast job.

Hogwash. I have bought Magnum Shielding Chromite cables, complete everything, 13" apes along with wiring extension. Maybe 5 and change for parts and my Indy charged me a C note. Some people may need to make friends with an Indy as I have.... Over a grand to have cables/bars installed? Not this guy and I am not so much of a DIY type guy.

Then you have a REALLY generous indy...I run a side business doing this sort of thing and charge 250.00 for the labor. My rates are way more than fair. It wouldn't be worth my time for less...I am never starved for work. I have one on the lift in my garage right now. BTW, if you paid 500.00 for parts, he probably made his money there. I can do it with quality parts for 350.00 so it 600.00 OTD the same as your indy...

Reminds me of the movie "The Jerk" "oohhh I get it it's a profit thing!"
I wonder how long a dealer could pay his over head if he worked for the same rate as the customer makes.
Well,I work full time and I only make $20 per hour. So dealer says 'ok I'll work on your bike for $20 per hour'-so out of that he pays his help, workers comp, insurance, heat, lights, franchise fee,and on and on...
        OP- get a clue.
