Currently have rinehart 4 inch slip ons and am considering adding an aftermarket air filter. I know i dont have to tune for the slip ons but if I add an air filter does that require a tune?
In most cases yes- the increased air flow into the motor and the increased flow out of the motor require a bit more gas added to the mix to get a better burn which will result in more power.
"tuning" devices vary in cost and abilities and in some cases the result depends on the owner ( or tech's ) settings
I use nightrider.com xieds.
while limited in ability ( rev limit remains stock) they work for me
If you are just replacing your filter with a K&N or similar filter, no. If you are replacing your entire air filter system to open up your breather box, Yes you do.
Although the slip on's may not require tuning or dyno, once you add more air into the mix.........you'll need a tuner and dyno. If not, well it will run like chit and sound like crap, don't go cheap..........after all you get what you paid for.

I have a similar question. I currently have Vance and Hines slip ons with a SE heavy breather and SE race tuner. Going with the Big Shots and wondering if I need to retune. Any advice?
I would recommend a power vision from Fuelmoto. You can bundle with their Air Cleaner, and they throw in a free mounting kit so you can mount your Power Vision to your handlebars if you want.
Powervision lets you auto tune your bike without having to go to the dealer. Very handy. Fuelmoto has lots of maps, and was mine was pre-loaded with a map when I received it. (just told them what setup I was running) I did a auto-tune after, and the map was super close. Just my opinion PV1 is for 2013 and below, PV2 2014-2015
You need to tune any stage, even stock,as soon as the bike is broken in. When we had carbs, i don't know anyone who would not tune his bike. Now that it costs $$$ people don't think they need a tune because they don't want to spend the cash. No tune, you don't know what your missing........
