Default How much oil will it hold?

Just did my first self service and was surprised the bike only held 3qts of Mobile One V-Twin even after it was warmed up and circulated thru the filter. And I let it drain a long time..lol.. Is this the norm?

hey webo, manual says the bike holds 4 quarts with filter. it also says when refilling add 3 quarts then add more as necessary to bring to specs. so.....3 is about right i'd guess

I may be razzed over this but I am very **** about changing my oil. I pull the spark plug wires and hit the start button, allow the drips to come out and repeat several times. Just like to make sure I get out all I can short of going to that kit I can't think of right now that is supposed to completely evacuate your engine.

"Scavenger" puck. Thing looks like a waste of $$ to me.

I do not know how many on the forum do this, but when I change the oil, I use the scavenger oil change method.

I get about 28oz of dirty oil from the sump that would otherwise remain, and I put in 3 1/2 quarts of fresh oil with the new filter.

I used this on my '07 FLSTF and now on my '11 FLH. My Indy noted how clean the oil was after I had done an oil change and put 1,500 miles on my FLSTF, when I brought it in for him to do a 103 build on it.

that 28oz is a mix of old oil and new oil. i don't use the scavenger, but when i change my oil, i add 3-1/2 qts of fresh oil with the filter. that puts the oil level right in the middle of the hash marks so i don't get blowby. if i still had 28oz left in the sump, after adding 3-1/2 qts, that would bring the capacity up to 140oz, more than 1/2 qt more than the spec says is max.

Yes, Normal. I plan my oil changes. Normally done on a Friday after work, I pull into the garage and crack a coors. After about a 15-30 min cool down I pull the plugs and let it drain overnight. In the morning 3.25qts puts my engine oil right in the middle.

My '13 SG is 1/2 way up the stick (to minimize blow by) with a thorough drain, new filter and 3 liters (3.17 US quarts).

Sorry OP and do not mean to hijack the thread but my TC88 is going to an S&S 97 and they (S&S) are very finicky about the break in. My Indy just told me he doesn't use the Scavenger and I trust him completely. Going forward when doing my own oil changes I will continue to do what I have always done.

all fluid levels are based on visual checks- use the dipstick.

2.) spinning the motor with the plugs pulled works---BUT make sure the plugs are grounded to the motor or you can harm the ignition system...use big alligator clips or even jumper cables to connect the plug body to the motor

some will also pull the fuse for the fuel pump, I don;t bother
