I saved for 10 yrs & finally got a 2006 road king & on the way home the speedometer stopped working. I spent the last 3 days reading all these post but seams its always in conjuction with blinkers or something but mines only the speedometer.
I know you guys can lead me to the problem, and i thank you in advance.
easy to remove the speedo sensor from the top of the tranny and wipe it off with a rag...if the sensor has particles stuck to the magnet it won;t work.
the speedo sensor is held in place with an allen screw
thanks mike, i just ran to the shop & pulled the sensor out. It looked fine, I actually couldn't see anything on it.
OOH, What will I do, unplug the sensor & remove it from bike to see if ground is damaged?
I apologize for leaving off part of the answer -- it should be in the harness coming out of headlight bucket and going down the frame -- you should have a ground coming from the gauges into that part of the harness -- just splice into that ground and hook to another good ground. A wiring diagram is very helpful in chasing these problems -- if you have an ohm meter, connect it to the ground from the gauges and swing the forks back and forth with the handlebars -- thats how I found my ground problem -- in one position it read fine -- when swinging, it popped up.
UPDATE
I ran the diag & got this code U1097. I cleared code & started the bike, then reran the diag & none appeared.
U1097- Loss of Speedometer Serial Data to ECM, but how do I fix this??
