There are a few websites and phone apps that list campgrounds. You can usually stay free at state parks but they are primitive. Most equipped campgrounds in my area are $20-$40 a night for tents. There are also some pretty nice core of engineers campgrounds that are around $7/night I believe.

It's been at least ten years since I've camped primitive. A few things stand out in my mind though. Mosquitos, sunburn, sweat, mosquitos, seed ticks, headache, mosquitos, rocks under my bed, thunderstorm, no pillow, all at the same time while trying to sleep. Then breaking camp in the rain with a hangover. I don't think I've ever broke camp when it wasn't raining. But it was always good times and made memories. But now that I'm older and not so bulletproof, I really enjoy a bed, hot shower, toilet, and AC. The better rested I am, the more I enjoy the ride. I haven't been to Sturgis yet and I really think I'd like to make the 2-3 day trip and camp on the way there and back. As long as I invest in a good bed, and get a shower here and there, I think I'll be OK.

Check out this link. http://www.ridingacrossusa.com/forum/links/ Just scroll down to campgrounds and select a state. I live in NC and we have many motorcycle friendly and motorcycle only campgrounds.

Too many years, and too many miles on this old body to be sleeping on the ground now, but I use to. The wife and I slept in a tent on KOA camp grounds all the way from central Texas to Priest River Idaho and back but we was young with out children.

Why not pull a small pop-up camper if you don't want to sleep on the ground. Or, pull a small cargo trailer and pack a tent along with a small cot.

A hammock would solve both those issues. Off the ground and way more comfortable than a cot.
