Default How to identify 103 motor vs 96

I'm looking at a used 2011 street glide tonight and the guy says it has a 103 but how can I be certain that it is a 103 and not a 96? Is there a VIN identifier for that motor?

The only difference will be the bore size. All the components except pistons rings and wristpin are the same. I cant think of a way to externally verify that it is a 103.

However, the ECM should be tuned in some fashion for a 103. It should have a custom tune of some fashion or a factory tune for the 103. A 103 engine with a stock 96 tune would run quite lean and likely cause premature engine damage. I would have the moco look at the ECM calibration or ask him how it is calibrated for the 103.

The HD Powerpak was an option on the 2011 SG, It came bundled having the 103 motor with an oil cooler, ABS and security. Although the ABS and security are also available options, the 103 came with the oil cooler.

Illinois registration shows the displacement in CC's. So, 1584=96 and 1,690=103 ........... Just ask to see his registration

There is a VIN ID - KB4 is the 96 and KBM is 103.

Yep the VIN is the key unless he claimed he put the 103 kit in it, then a receipt for the work would work

That means nothing. My bikes VIN says it's a 96 and I have running around for five years with 103 stage II kit installed.

If he says it's a 103 and the registration or VIN says so too, then case closed.

Default 103

Looking at the engine, the 103 should have automatic compression releases and the 96 won't.

As previosly stated, start with the vin. If it says 103 you should be good.

If not:

1- It should have compression releases but not necessarily if its a 103. Was it a factory 103? It just depends on what kit was installed. Compression releases are highly recommended but some people dont. Furthermore, just because it has compression releases dont mean its a 103. Some folks stay with stock bore and put ported and polished heads and cams and install ACRs.

2- Look at the ECM Map it will tell you what the bike has in it assuming the installer installed a map with the kit.
