Default Shifter link broke!

Just got home from a 400+ mile road trip today. About 160 miles from home, on the way back, I stopped at a red light in a small town and heard a metalic noise so I looked down on the left side to see my shift lever sitting on the floor board. The rod where the ball hooks in had come loose. I slipped it back on to be able to shift when the light turned green and pulled over at a station. The rod wouldn't stay on the ball so I retrieved a 'zip tie' from the trunk and secured it. Has anyone else has had this problem? My bike is an '03 UC with 48K on the clock. It's weird the way it happened and I guess in a pretty good place rather than pulling onto a busy interstate or in rush hour traffic!

On a side note: I always carry a few spare zip ties, electrical tape, band aids, tire gauge, knife, etc. in a small, zipperedtool bag along with the normaltool kit. Just curious what anyone else may carry in case of emergency. Ride safe!

I haven't carrying anything extra but after your story I will be. It's amazing what you can do with a few zip ties.

I've seen this happen twice now with guys I ride with. Always carry zip ties and electrical tape.

We've had this topic a time or two in the past few months. Besides the usual stuff, I carry Cryo Light Sticks.

Yeah the stock shifters are poorly designed. Spend the $150 and get one that hasthe solid Heim ball joint typeends on it. (I think that is what they are called) It also made the shifting on mine much better too.

Also, I am another that never leaves without zip ties and electrical tape. Isnt it great owning a Harley. Its funny though, I dont have to worry about having those supplies on my new Chevy truck.

NOT an '03 thing. That stock shift linkage rod is a $20.00 replacement that you can get at your dealer......which tells you it is worth about 3 bucks. Mine went South on me in Yellowstone National Park of all places, and in the rain. Two zip ties saved the day. The stainless heim-jointed units are a good preventative and replacement for this cheap, barely adequate, stock unit.

Saw it happen a couple of times an a zip tie saved the day in both cases. I never leave home with out them.

Anybody got a picture of where these things break, or a picture of the weak part we should be keeping an eye on?
