Default 2005 road king custom 1500 backfire

this 2005 raod king custom came from colorado, just a few miles from the rockies . wondering if the fuel/air mix is different in colorado than in ohio? it does have after market pipes.
the bike back fires when in low rpms, mostly in 3rd. pipes pop, then carb sucks air then runs good again. bike also has backfired when getting on the gas. bike backfires more when in low rpms.

thanks for looking, i am looking at other posts on this site and they are helpfull. i just do not have time to read all posts.

Carbed or fuel injected??
Sounds like a lean condition......

The elevation will make a difference in the F/A mixture of a carb.
Going to a lower elevation would need a larger jet in the pilot and the main.
I would go one size up and try that to see.
Do a couple of plug chops to dial in the mixture.

Fuel injected doesn't need any fuel related tuning, that I know of.

Air leaks in either type will give backfires and popping also.

I have an 05 with EFI. I live about 50 feet above sea level, and rode across Colorado last year with no issues. I doubt your problem is related to elevation changes.

I had a 2005 RK Custom, in PA. It started to run rough so I bought a tuner (Fuel Moto) and it ran like a champ.

I had the same deal going on with V&H Dressers, Rinehart 4"ers, and a Big Sucker II. I bought a Fuel Moto PCIII and the bike has never run better. Read your spark plugs, I'm betting they're white and that thing is running too lean.

plugs where white, filter was good had a little oil though.
carb looked clean, bladder in carb was good.
seemed like air was coming from the front pipe, looking more into that pipe.
starting hear different sounds from bike, not sure if they are good sounds.
i am going to look at a Fuel Moto PCIII.

thanks again for the info

Can't use that on a bike with a carb!
Those are for FI bikes

Running more than factory lean conditions are not good for a motor. Best to find the problem(s) and cure before they do damage.
Check the seals around the carb, manifold and head spigots for air leaking causing a lean popping.
Spray some WD40 around the seals and if engine changes pitch or sound, you got a leak somewhere.
