Default Tank Emblem Removal/Stage 1 AC Install

Got bored today so I decided to finally remove the tank emblems from my 2011 FLHX. I've always hated those emblems, but was just lazy enough not to care until today when I got motivated before work and installed the Stage 1 kit as well. Turned out really well with no paint blemishes at all. Now i can't decide to leave it plain or order nicer emblems for it.

Below is the process i used:

1. Soak the emblem from the top with Goo Gone Automotive and let sit for 5min
2. Evenly heat the emblem with wife's (or yours ) hairdryer for a few minutes
3:I used my Kershaw Leek pocket knife (i've heard of some guys using fishing line) to slide behind and slowly pry the emblem off. Start from one side and move all the way across. Most of the adhesive came off with the emblem for me.
4. Used diaper cloth along with Goo Gone to remove the residual adhesive.

Total time for emblem removal was roughly 45 minutes. I also Plasti-dipped my old air cleaner medallion and it fits the Stage 1 filter perfectly so no more football!

Wanted to take mine off but, its been on there since 04. I'm thinking it will probably leave a ghost effect. Yours looks really good. Nice job on the A/C cover.

Threedeuce5, Man u stole my idea, jk.
I thought no one would do exactly what I wanted on my air cleaner.
I had that ac inset on my ironhead when I was a pup, and wanted to keep my youth alive, by painting it black an using it on an S&S stealth.
I gotta say, our idea looks better than I even imagined!
Great job and thanks for confirming. I'll add a pic of my cover when I get home, although it looks exactly like yurs, so...
Anyway, great job, I like the emblems gone too.
What intake system is that, btw ?

Great minds think alike eh? lol That's just a HD Stage 1 Intake kit. After I bought it and installed in I couldn't help but think how easy it would be to turn your stock backplate into a "stage 1" with a roto zip and a new air cleaner.

Dude i'm looking to go the same route! Your King looks great! How did you end up mounting yours to the tank? Do you think I could use 3M VHB and just fill the screw holes or do you need to have that backing plate?

The emblem screws to the mounting plate, and that has to be ordered separately.
The backing plate kit comes with double sided 3m tape.
I'm about to do the same one.

Please people find another tank emblem - everyone who wants 'vintage' uses that - there are plenty others that came on old Harleys - this for example:

Exactly what Ragtop said, a backing plate with 3m adhesive that needs to be ordered separately. I ended up pulling off their 3m tape and using stronger and thinner 3m trim adhesive, so it sits closer to the tank (I'm a little **** about that stuff) and I bent around the backing plate to get the tightest fit on the tank. What the bitch is when installing is getting the second side to match the exact location of the first side. First side took about 5 minutes, second side took about 45 minutes with masking tape and measurements marked all over the tape on the tank. Good luck!!
