:icon_toliet:Thinking: Where can I learn about the Harley canbus without buying the Harley electrical shop manual.
I want to compare it to obd11 etc and understand how close it is to standard obd11 canbus and automobile tech. Anyone have a web based copy?:icon_handball:

Damngood question, I would like to learn more too. Maybe ask if someone could guide you to a site somewhere not to provide something on this forum! Like from behind mentioned, we are being monitored and believe me asking for a ele copy on here will get recognized!

the canbus protocol can be found on the web, it's not a secret...how it works, standardization etc.

specific application to your make/ model will be in the manual.

it's not black magic, just a relay/logic based method of controlling circuits on the bike

the reasoning for it is that about 100 pounds of wiring can be eliminated on passenger cars- which gives better mpg. the technology trickles down to us.

another standardized automotive change which has been in the works for many ( over 20) years is moving toward a high voltage electrical system...24 volt has been considered, but they may just leap over that to 48 volt.
this allows wire gauges 1/4 what they are now...a further cost saving in material and weight.

similar to the switch over from 6 to 12 volt starting in the 50's...which took about 20 years to take full effect

What are you after ?

The electrical manual for a given year of production will give you error code numbers with their signification.
A "man of the trade" will read through the manual once and store it on a high shelf. Diagnostic procedures are well explained and super simple for most of us to understand.

If you are familiar with CAN software you know you can only 'see' compiled data through a generic window ... The framework of the compiler is updated/modified every 2 years or so and the electrical manual doesn't detail the algorithms you seek to change calculated output values.

The main advantage of the newer systems is in the "Fuzzy-Logic" that anticipates and decides to use mapped values when the calculated values are reaching the limit compared to relay or transistor transient logic that produced a binary choice instead of an auto-adaptive logic.

HD Forums plus a shop manual will answer 85% of your questions; the key to rest lies somewhere in an oyster :icon_captain:
