Well I have some modern garments and they make a pretty big difference in comfort. For Me if it is in the 30s - 40s I can stay fairly comfortable for shorter rides of 60-100 miles but I do get cold in the end.

Blocking the wind with a batwing, hard lowers and deflectors for my hands helped more than I ever imagined it would.

I think that heated gear would be the ultimate way to stay warm though. These days you can get battery operated stuff from DeWalt, Milwaukee, and other tool makers with proven batteries for reasonable prices. I would start with a vest to keep my core warm first.

I am certain there are others who will add real experience with heated gear.

Another thing is our individual tolerance for temperature extremes. I am ok with a tshirt in the low 50s but my Dad is cold in the upper 60s. This is just hanging around outside not riding for relatively short periods of time.

gerbing jacket liner, the dam thing even heats up around the back of your neck(no more shoulder scrunching) i can go into the 20"s with a tee heatedliner and leather. its also prewired for the heated gloves. I've tried warm and safe, returned it for the garbing. skip the vest.
